I swear my neighbor's cedar fence stain advice was totally backwards
Visited my folks' place in Spokane last month and everyone says to use oil-based stain for cedar, but my neighbor used a cheap water-based one from Home Depot on his fence and it's held up through 2 winters now without peeling. I'm talking 30 bucks a gallon vs the $50 stuff. Has anyone else had good luck with the budget option?

Cheap water-based held up 2 winters" - was it a solid stain or the semi-transparent kind?
