Hot take: those $30 concrete patch bags at Home Depot are a scam for small jobs

Last summer I was fixing a crack in my own driveway and grabbed one of those pre-mixed bags instead of mixing my own. My neighbor came over, a guy who's been pouring slabs since the 80s, and laughed his ass off. He said "you're paying for sand and dust, that stuff crumbles in 6 months." Three months later he was right, the patch was already cracking. Now I just buy Portland cement and fine sand separate for like $8 total. Has anyone else had these store-brand patch mixes fail on them?

Concrete patch bags are basically just really expensive sand mix, you're better off with the raw materials every time. Also just a heads up, Portland cement and fine sand makes a mortar not concrete, you'd want some gravel in there too for driveway strength.

The real trick nobody mentions is just using hydraulic cement for small cracks.
