Question about the actual cost of a DIY paver patio

I just finished adding up all my receipts for my 12x14 patio project and the total was $1,850. I was honestly shocked it got that high, even doing all the labor myself. Some folks say you should always budget 30% more than the initial estimate, but others argue that careful planning and buying materials in phases can keep you right on target. What's your experience with budgets blowing up versus staying under control?
