My weekend patio project turned into a concrete nightmare

Honestly, last Saturday started fine, I was just laying a simple 10x12 foot paver patio. Tbh, I didn't check the weather and a surprise thunderstorm rolled in right after I'd poured the leveling sand. The whole area turned into a soupy mess and washed out half my base. I spent all Sunday digging it out and letting it dry, which set me back like $80 in fresh materials. Has anyone else had a project totally wrecked by bad timing with the rain? What's the best way to protect a big area like that?

Man, does it feel like weather apps are just guessing half the time? I swear, every time I plan an outdoor project, the forecast changes last minute. For a big area, I've had some luck with those cheap plastic tarps from the hardware store and a bunch of bricks to hold the edges down. It's not perfect, but it beats redoing all the base work.
