My neighbor laughed at my wooden retaining wall before it rained for 3 days straight

He pointed out I stacked the blocks without gravel behind them so the water had nowhere to drain, and sure enough the whole thing buckled after a storm last June - has anyone else had a DIY project fail because of a tiny drainage mistake?

Built a little raised garden bed once without thinking about drainage. Put it right in a low spot in the yard. After one solid week of rain I had a muddy swimming pool full of dead tomato plants.

My grandpa built a whole deck that same way, no gravel behind the retaining wall, and it lasted 20 years because he used limestone blocks that let water seep through the rock itself. The real issue isn't just drainage, it's the type of block you pick. Compact concrete blocks trap water like a bathtub, while porous stone or proper weep holes give it a way out without the whole thing turning into a mudslide.
