My neighbor showed me how to start a fire with a soda can and chocolate

Last winter during that big ice storm in Portland, my power went out for 4 days. I was freezing until my neighbor Dale came over, took a soda can and a Hershey bar, and polished the bottom of the can with the chocolate until it shined like a mirror. He aimed it at some dry leaves and got a flame going in maybe 30 seconds. Has anyone else tried this trick with different types of chocolate bars?

Honestly sounds like Dale's been hiding a survivalist secret behind that friendly neighbor facade. Bet he could probably cook a gourmet meal with nothing but a candy wrapper and a paperclip.

Man I can barely get a regular lighter to work without burning my thumb, so watching someone start a fire with candy is both impressive and humbling. I tried this once with a cheap store brand chocolate bar and just ended up with a sticky mess on my hands while the can stayed cloudy. Gotta respect the chocolate mirror finish game.

Right there with you on the sticky mess part, and @brian_ramirez probably has a whole shed of candy survival gear.
