Used to sand drywall with just a pole sander. Now I use a vacuum attachment.

I did a bedroom ceiling last week in my 1950s house. Took me 3 hours just to sand and another 2 to clean up the dust cloud. It got into every crack, even with plastic sheeting. My neighbor came over and asked if I was trying to kill my lungs. He showed me his setup - a drywall sander with a shop vac hose hooked right to it. Almost zero dust. Ran me $60 for the adapter kit at Home Depot. First ceiling took half the time and no cleanup. Why did I suffer through that for 2 years?

My buddy Tom tried the vacuum trick on his garage ceiling and still ended up with dust in his coffee mug.

Have you tried putting a box fan in the window while you're sanding? I did my whole basement ceiling that way with the vacuum attachment and it helped a ton. I mean, I still had a little bit of dust settle on stuff but nothing like before. The vacuum adapter was a game changer for me too. I used to just accept that drywall dust would be everywhere for a week. Now I can sand a room and be done with cleanup in like 20 minutes. My wife actually let me do the living room ceiling after she saw how clean it stayed.

Box fan in the window is non-negotiable now. Game changer.
