The trick my uncle used to stop Christmas dinner fights about politics

Last Thanksgiving my uncle Bob pulled me aside and said the secret is to ask one specific question before anyone starts arguing. He said to ask 'what's a good thing that happened to you this week?' right when tensions start rising. I tried it at our family dinner last Sunday when my cousin and dad started going at it about taxes. It actually worked - it shifted everyone's focus to something positive and we avoided a blowup. Has anyone else tried a redirect like this to keep the peace at the table?

My uncle Bob and this question trick would not work in my family. Last Christmas I tried asking my aunt about a good thing that happened to her that week and she just said "your cousin's A in algebra" before launching into a 20 minute rant about property taxes anyway. I ended up hiding in the kitchen pretending to check on a casserole I didn't even bring just to escape. Pretty sure the only thing that stops our dinner fights is someone running out of wine first.

@elizabethg18 did your aunt at least seem happy about the A before she went off about taxes?
