My uncle called me out for always putting ketchup on my steak at Thanksgiving
He said I was ruining good meat and making it taste like McDonald's - tried one bite without it and realized I'd been covering up bad cooking for 20 years lol. Anyone else have a family member who hit them with that one brutal truth at the table?

Yo this is exactly what happened to me but with my grandma and her meatloaf! @elliot45 said it perfectly about dry cuts of meat needing sauce sometimes. I was at a family dinner last year and my cousin called me out for drowning my steak in A1 and I got defensive at first but then I tried hers without it and wow it was like chewing on a shoe sole covered in salt. Now I just ask people to cook my meat medium rare and skip the ketchup altogether unless it's a burger or something. But yeah your uncle probably saved you from a lifetime of bad steak lol.

About 20 years ago my dad said the same thing to me over Thanksgiving turkey... turns out he was right too. But here's the thing - I actually still use ketchup sometimes on dry cuts of meat if the texture is off. Not every steak needs sauce, but if someone cooked it well-done and forgot the salt, ketchup saves it. Your uncle had a point but honestly there's nothing wrong with liking what you like even if it masks bad cooking.
