I used to tune a diesel by the sound of its idle alone.

Now I have to plug in a scanner and hope the software updates didn't break anything.

Switched to keeping older diagnostic tools for my 2018 truck. The dealer software update locked out a basic calibration last month. Now I keep a dedicated laptop with the last open-source version that still lets me reset the throttle body.

My 2016 Silverado needed the same throttle relearn last year. I had to hunt down an old version of the software too, it's a real pain. The_cora is right, they're locking us out of our own stuff on purpose. I keep a cheap laptop in the garage just for that old program now.
