The $65 fondue set that turned my date into a 911 call

Took this girl to my place last month, thought making fondue would be classy. The pot I bought from a garage sale had a frayed cord, cheese started bubbling, then sparks flew everywhere and the breaker tripped. She laughed it off but her cat knocked the whole thing off the counter, hot cheese on my rug, and she left saying she was 'allergic to my kitchen.' Has anyone else had a cooking date turn into a fire hazard?
