My local library's free wifi logged my entire search history
I was using the public computers in Springfield last Tuesday to look up some medical symptoms, and the next day I got ads for related medications on my personal phone. The librarian quietly told me their system shares data with the city's ad network to fund the free service. How do you even begin to scrub your trail after something like that happens?

Check if your phone was on the same wifi at the time, because that's probably how they linked it. You can clear your phone's advertising ID in the settings, which helps a bit. Honestly, though, the data is already out there and you can't really pull it back. This is why using a personal hotspot on your phone is safer for sensitive searches, even on a library computer. It's pretty shady for a public service to do that without a clear warning sign right on the login page.

Yeah, the "data is already out there" part is the real kicker. Same thing happened to me looking up divorce lawyers on a cafe's wifi, and my feed was just law firm ads for weeks. Clearing the ad ID is a good move, but it feels like closing the barn door after the horse is gone.

Isn't it wild how we've all just accepted that anything we do online can get sold to the highest bidder without blinking? @reesemiller is right that the data is already floating around out there, but the real pattern I keep seeing is how even public services like libraries feel forced to turn our private searches into cash just to keep the lights on. It's like every corner of life now has this hidden price tag on your privacy that you don't find out about until it's too late.
