Spent $80 on a cheap rain jacket and froze for 3 hours

I've always gone for the budget gear, you know. 40 bucks at a big box store. Figured it all works the same. Finally got caught in a real storm trimming a dead oak in the rain last Thursday. Soaked through in 20 minutes. Hands went numb. Borrowed my crew guy's Patagonia he got for $200 on sale and stayed bone dry the whole rest of the job. Paid double for a solid shell the next day. No more guessing. Anyone else keep learning this lesson the hard way with outdoor gear?

That bit about "no more guessing" really hit home for me. I used to swear by the cheap stuff too, thought spending more was just paying for a brand name. But after a couple soggy, miserable hikes where I was just done halfway through, I finally broke down and got a decent shell. Your mileage may vary, but for me it was a total game changer.

Picked up an REI shell on clearance and it was night and day difference. The thing actually breathes so you're not just wearing a plastic bag.
