Just realized I was seasoning cast iron wrong for 5 years

I used soap and water every time and scrubbed it like a maniac, but last week the skillet started rusting and a friend at the bar finally told me to just wipe it and oil it lightly. Now it's back to non-stick, but I feel dumb. Anyone else have a kitchen habit they only caught after something rusted or cracked?
