Told my dad joke about a broken pencil at my nephew's birthday party and the room went dead silent for 8 full seconds
I was standing in my sister's kitchen holding a plate of cake when I said 'why is a broken pencil so sad? because it has no point' and my brother-in-law just stared at me while my 6 year old nephew asked if pencils have feelings, has anyone else had a joke land so flat you could hear the fridge humming?

The dead silence after "it has no point" is brutal, I've been there. Next time just own it with a shrug and move on to asking who wants more cake before anyone can analyze it.

Hannah's got a point about deflecting with cake. But what about the people who can't just throw a party when the room goes quiet. The silence after "it has no point" hits different when you're talking to someone who actually needs a reason for everything you do. Like, do you just keep skating by with cake for the rest of your life, or is there a way to actually get them to drop it.
