TIL my joke about the cake caused a 20 minute silence at my sister's baby shower

Last month in Phoenix, my sister asked me to say a few words at her shower. I thought I'd lighten the mood with a classic: "Why did the baby cross the road? To get to the other diaper." Thing is, her new mother-in-law runs a diaper bank and took it as a jab at her fundraising. The room went dead quiet for 20 minutes until someone started cutting the cake. I've sworn off food jokes at family events since. Has anyone else had a harmless joke backfire because of one person's specific job or hobby?

20 minutes of silence over a diaper joke sounds more like everyone else being dramatic than you messing up. Some people just love making everything a bigger deal than it needs to be.
