That awkward silence after the 'ground beef' joke at Thanksgiving

I told my aunt Carol that I was 'beefing up' the gravy with some ground beef and she stared at me for a solid 10 seconds before saying she's a vegetarian and has been for 12 years. The whole table went quiet except for my Uncle Bob who whispered 'well that backfired' under his breath. My mom still brings it up every year and asks if I'm planning any 'meat-based humor' for the holidays. Has anyone else accidentally roasted a family member's life choices with a dumb pun?

Uncle Bob whispering "well that backfired" actually made me rethink my whole approach to holiday jokes.

Man, that story hits different when you think about it past the laugh. My buddy Dan tried a "your mom" joke at a quiet dinner with his girlfriend's parents for the first time. He said it about the turkey, not even thinking, and her dad just went silent for a full 10 seconds. His mom gave this tight little smile and said "well, my mother always said too many cooks spoil the broth" and changed the subject. He spent the whole car ride home trying to figure out what the heck just happened and he still brings it up years later.
