My "funny" census joke backfired at the family reunion in Boise
I thought it would be hilarious to tell my aunt that the 2020 census counted her cat because she listed it as a dependent. Found out later that she actually did that, and she thought I was mocking her for real. She didn't talk to me for the whole three-hour dinner. Has anyone else had a joke accidentally hit a truth you didn't know about?
Wait, she actually listed the cat as a dependent on the census form? Like, on purpose, with the cat's name and everything? I'm dying to know if she was trying to be funny too or if she genuinely thought cats count as people in her house. And more importantly, did the census people follow up with her about it, because that would be an amazing letter to get in the mail. So was she mad at you for "making fun" of her, or was she mad because she got caught doing something she knew was weird? Either way, three hours of silence at a family dinner is brutal.
