Hot take: My "you're not fully dressed without a smile" joke at the dentist got me banned from the waiting room

So last Tuesday I'm in the chair at Dr. Chen's office in Phoenix getting a filling done. The hygienist is poking around and I figure hey, let's lighten the mood with a classic. I say "you're not fully dressed without a smile" and she just stared at me with those gloves on. Then the dentist walks in and I repeat it thinking maybe she didn't hear me. He told me flat out "that's inappropriate for a medical setting" and asked me to leave. Had to reschedule for next week and now I gotta find a new dentist. Has anyone else gotten banned from a place for a joke that was totally fine at a barbecue?

Totally agree with @troythompson here. I made a comment about the weather to my eye doctor while he was doing an exam and he deadpanned "can we focus on the task at hand" and didn't talk to me for the rest of the visit. Medical people are in their own zone. They got protocols and liability stuff. A joke they'd laugh at over beers is a fireable offense in that room. You gotta just sit there and take the poking. Save the one-liners for the parking lot.

Man you gotta read the room, medical folks are all business and no jokes.
