Got hit with 11,000 login tries on my home router in one weekend

I checked my router logs last Saturday morning just out of boredom and saw 11,000 failed login attempts since Friday night. My heart kind of dropped because I had left remote admin turned on for years and never thought twice about it. I turned off WAN access, set up a guest network for all the smart plugs, and updated the firmware that same day. Two neighbors on my street in Fresno had the same thing happen, so it seems like a bot was sweeping our whole block. Curious what you all do about remote access, do you just keep it off completely or use a VPN to get back in?

Did your friend ever try just turning off remote admin and using a VPN instead?
