Overheard a customer berate a cashier over a 40 cent coupon and something snapped

I was at a grocery store in Columbus last Tuesday, just grabbing stuff for dinner. This lady in front of me is arguing with the cashier because her coupon didn't stack with a store sale. It was 40 cents. She told the cashier that people like her are why the country is going downhill. The cashier was maybe 19 years old, looked like she was about to cry. I didn't say anything in the moment and I regret it. I get that prices are up and everyone is frustrated but this was not about the money. This was about the power trip. I wanted to ask that lady, how much does that 40 cents matter to you compared to wrecking some kid's shift? Has anyone else seen a customer cross a line where it's not even about the product or service anymore, it's just pure cruelty? What do you even say in that situation without making it worse?
