Appreciation post: I picked a 'character wakes up with amnesia' prompt over a 'haunted house' one for my writing group
I mean, I thought the amnesia idea would be more original, but now I'm totally stuck trying to figure out how my guy even makes coffee without remembering his own name. Maybe it's just me, but does anyone have a trick for making memory loss plots feel fresh and not totally frustrating to write?

Original idea" is doing a lot of work here. The coffee thing is the whole point, not a problem to fix. Muscle memory for basic tasks is how you show the disconnect between what the body knows and what the mind forgot.

That coffee ritual thing hits on something bigger I see all the time. Watch people who lose their keys or wallet, but still know exactly how to make their morning coffee or tie their shoes without thinking. The brain holds onto the physical routines way longer than it holds onto the facts and dates and names. It is like the body keeps a backup copy of who you are when the mind starts slipping.
