A stranger's note on my workshop prompt changed how I write dialogue
Last month I left a prompt about two people stuck in an elevator on a public board, and someone named Dana messaged me a single line: 'Your characters talk like they're already friends.' It made me realize I skip the awkward small talk that real strangers actually have. Have you ever gotten feedback that showed you a blind spot you didn't know you had?
That Dana line is so sharp because it's not even about dialogue, it's about how you see people. When you write two strangers talking like old friends, you're showing you don't really believe strangers are strange. Like, the small talk isn't filler, it's the whole point. Two people in an elevator who don't know each other would be testing each other, guessing, getting it wrong. You skipped the guessing.
