Pro tip: a whiteboard chore chart made my roommate do LESS and I can prove it
Two months ago I got sick of being the only one who cleaned, so I hung a dry erase board on the fridge with chores split down the middle. I figured seeing it in writing would guilt my roommate into pulling his weight, but the exact opposite happened. He started erasing his own tasks off the board and telling me they were "done" without actually touching a sponge, and somehow the kitchen got worse. By week three the sink was full of his pots and the board had one lonely checkmark on it, which was mine. When I called him out he said the board was "passive aggressive" and we needed to "just talk about it like adults." Is a chore chart actually a bad idea, or did I just pick the wrong guy to live with?
Man, come on. Chore charts work fine for tons of people, and writing stuff down on a fridge board is about as basic as it gets. He erased his own tasks and lied about doing them, so how is the board the problem? A dry erase board did not make him skip scrubbing pots or fake a checkmark. The guy flat out told you he wanted to talk about it face to face, and you went with a silent marker board instead. That is on you for picking a sneaky way to call him out when he was asking for a real conversation. Next time just talk to him first and save the fridge space.
