Warning: the tagline angle trick that saved my butt on a blind pick last Tuesday
Last Tuesday I had to set up on a rooftop unit in Mesa with a 60 ton rig and the load chart had me right at the edge of my radius. Could not see the pick point from the cab, no spotter available, just me and a radio that kept cutting out.
What I tried: instead of trusting the radio I hung a 4 foot piece of flagging tape off my headache ball and taped a second piece at the exact height the load block should sit when the boom angle was right. Took 30 seconds with the tape I already had in my pocket. From the cab I could glance over and see if the tape lined up with the roofline. It did, every time. Load came up clean, no swing, no guessing.
I know it sounds simple but I have watched guys at other sites stare at load charts for 20 minutes and still second guess. This gave me a real visual reference without needing anyone to talk me in.
Anyone else doing something like this with flagging tape or chalk marks? Curious what heights or references you all use when you cannot see the pick.
