Tried a new hand signal system with my ground guy on a tight lift in Tacoma, and it actually went smoother than our usual radio chatter.

Switched to hand signals on a tricky downtown job last year. Cut out all the radio static and confusion. Crew loved it.

Honestly, that sounds great for a tight crew who all know the signals. The problem I've seen is when you bring in a new guy or a sub from another company, and suddenly you're miming at each other like confused traffic cops. Radios are messy, but at least everyone hears the same clear word.

My buddy's crew tried that on a bridge job and it went bad fast. They had a temp guy who thought the "all stop" signal meant speed up, and he nearly backed a loader off the edge. They went back to radios the next day, lol.
