Switched from 3/4 inch to 5/8 inch wire rope on my 40 ton and I am not going back
Last month I swapped the main hoist from 3/4 inch wire rope to 5/8 inch on my 40 ton Grove because the spooling was getting sloppy on tall picks. I was worried about the capacity hit, but after running the numbers with a 6 part line it came out to plenty for what I lift. First job was setting 12,000 lb precast panels in Aurora and the difference was night and day. The line runs cleaner, less birdcaging, and the sheaves are way happier. I was fighting drum wrap every single day before, now I am not babysitting the spool at all. Only downside is I had to buy new wedge sockets and a different head ache on the dead end. Anybody else running 5/8 on a 40 ton or am I the only one who made the switch?
Man I know exactly what you mean about babysitting that drum all day, it wears you down more than the actual lifting. Sounds like the 5/8 was the right call for your setup, and if the numbers work on a 6 part then who cares what the book says. That dead end headache is real though.
