Pro tip: picking the wrong load chart setting on a 60 ton nearly cost me a re-rig
Last Thursday I had a rooftop HVAC unit to set at a hospital in Garland, and I had to choose between booming out with the main boom or running the jib to get the radius I needed over the parking deck. I went with the jib because it felt safer, but the chart cut my capacity way down and the pick was only 300 lbs under the limit the whole way. I got it set, but I was sweating the swing and had to stop twice to let the load settle. Next time I'm walking the site first and measuring the radius with a tape instead of eyeballing it from the seat. What do you all do when the chart numbers and your gut don't agree?
Ever notice how your gut is usually right but the chart is what pays the bills? Tbh I trust the math over the feeling every time, then slow down and double check the setup before I commit. Walking the site and taping the radius is the move, no shame in taking ten extra minutes.
