I'm at a yard outside of Dayton and back in March the super started handing out printed plan sheets for every pick, showing the crane position, boom angle, and load radius before you even crank up. My average setup went from about 40 minutes down to 20 because I'm not walking the load path guessing anymore. But two operators on my crew say the new guys never learn to read a site, they just stare at the paper and miss overhead wires. I get both sides, one guy almost tagged a power line last month because the sheet didn't show it. So which is it, does planning ahead make a better operator or just a lazy one? Curious what other yards are doing.
I worked a job in Miamisburg last fall where the foreman printed out plan sheets every morning, and about three weeks in we had one guy who would stand at the tailgate studying the paper for ten minutes before he'd even look up at the site. Good plans, but he treated the sheet like it was the whole world. What got him in trouble was a tree the printout didn't mark that had grown out over the driveway, snagged his headache ball on the way in. Sheet had the right radius and boom angle, just no tree. So the paper was right about everything it knew and still almost cost us a window. Half the setup time saved is real money though, no arguing that.
