Ruined 3 pounds of chicken thighs because my freezer door didn't latch all the way
Found out Saturday morning when I went to grab coffee creamer and the whole bottom of the freezer was a sheet of ice. The door had been cracked since Thursday night, so everything in there got hit with the freeze thaw cycle for almost two days. My 3 pounds of chicken thighs were gray and slimy, and the ground beef smelled like a wet dog. I ended up tossing about $40 worth of meat straight into the trash, which stings because I was planning to stretch those thighs into four dinners this week. Tried to save the frozen peas and a bag of blueberries but they'd turned into one solid block so I just pitched them too. Now I'm staring at an almost empty freezer trying to figure out what I can actually build from a half bag of rice, two cans of beans, and some sad celery. What do you all do when your stash goes bad, do you just eat pantry stuff for a week or run out and restock right away?
Been there. The freeze thaw thing is the worst because stuff looks fine until you touch it and then it's just slime city. I usually do pantry week when this happens, beans and rice with whatever sad veg is left, but I hit the store for a few cheap staples like eggs and tortillas so it doesn't feel like full on survival mode. If you've got celery and beans you can do a decent soup with some bouillon if you have it. Four dinners out of those thighs was a good plan though, that one hurts.
