Burned my third batch of cookies this month and then read a line from my grandma's old recipe card that said 'watch the oven, not the clock'.
That note made me realize I've been staring at timers instead of looking for the actual golden edges on the cookies, and my last batch came out perfect after I just watched them turn brown. Has anyone else found old recipe notes from family that totally changed how you cook something?

Oh man your grandma's note is brilliant. I had a similar thing with my aunt's pancake recipe. She wrote "batter should be lumpy" on the card and I spent years trying to get it smooth until one day I just left it alone with all those lumps. Best pancakes I ever made. They were so fluffy and tender. I think we get so caught up in following every step exactly that we miss the little hints our family tucked in there for us. Your grandma knew what she was talking about.

My grandma had a note on her pie crust recipe that said "cold hands make flaky crusts." I spent years using ice water and chilled butter but still got tough dough. One day I realized she meant literally cold hands, so I started running my hands under cold water before mixing and it actually worked. Now I keep a bowl of ice water next to my counter just to dip my hands in before touching dough.
