A bus driver's offhand remark changed my stance on tipping

I've always been firm that tipping is outdated and should be replaced with fair wages, but last Tuesday I overheard a Metro Transit driver in Portland mention how her pension only covers half her rent. She wasn't complaining, just stating a fact, and it hit me that the people I refused to tip often have no safety net at all. I'm not saying the system is right, but I now think refusing to tip in protest just hurts individuals, not the companies that underpay them. Has anyone else had a small comment flip their whole view on a big issue like this?
