Unpopular opinion: the client who watched me replace a laptop keyboard at a Starbucks in Reno taught me more than any cert
I used to hide my screen when working in public. Last month I grabbed a corner table at the Starbucks on South Virginia in Reno to swap a keyboard on a client's ThinkPad because their office was getting fumigated. This older guy kept glancing over, and I figured he was just nosy. Around the third screw he said, "You label your screws by length, smart. I ran a repair bench for 22 years and half my guys mixed them up." We ended up talking for 40 minutes while I worked. He showed me a trick where you lay the tiny screws on a strip of masking tape in the order they come out, and it keeps them from rolling into a vent grate. That one tip saved me a $60 replacement order two weeks later when a screw bounced off my bench. I still do the tape thing every single teardown now. What weird little habits did you pick up from someone watching you work in public?
