Saw a repair shop in Austin using a label maker on every single screw, should I start doing this?
I was dropping off a client's laptop at a shop over on Burnet Road last Thursday and the owner gave me a quick tour while he finished up a ticket. Every screw on his bench had a little printed label next to it saying which device and which step it came from, like "T440 hinge, step 3." He said it cut his lost screw problems down to almost nothing and he has not mixed up a screw order in two years. I have been doing this work for nine years and I just use a magnetic mat with numbered spots, which works fine maybe 80 percent of the time. But I have definitely spent 20 minutes hunting for a tiny screw that rolled off and I am wondering if labeling is worth the extra setup hassle. His bench looked way more organized than mine, I will admit that. For the folks here who do a lot of teardowns, do you label screws or do you just trust your mat and your memory? And if you label, what do you use that does not peel off halfway through the job?
