A tender on the Sabine River bet me $100 my bailout bottle would fail inspection, and he was dead right
Two months back we were working a dock job near Port Arthur and this older tender named Ray, who had maybe 20 years on me, kept eyeballing my bailout bottle every time I strapped it on. I told him it was fine, I check it before every dive, and he said "son, checking it is not the same as knowing it." He offered to bet me $100 it would flunk a proper hydro and visual. I laughed him off for a week. Then a slow Friday came and I let him run it through the shop anyway. The valve seat was pitted, the O-ring was flat, and the hydro stamp was two months past due. I never felt a thing wrong with it on any dive, which is the scary part. I paid him the $100 and he bought the crew lunch with it, and honestly I got off cheap. Now I want to know from you guys, how often do you really pull your bailout for a full tear down versus just topping it off? I am starting to think most of us only find out when it matters.
