The guy at my local shop in Cleveland who called me out for bagging my comics wrong
About 12 years back I was at a tiny comic shop on West 25th in Cleveland and the owner, Sal, watched me stuff a stack of X-Men issues into a regular shopping bag like they were groceries. He stopped me and said 'you're gonna fold those corners and hate yourself in 10 years,' then spent 20 minutes showing me how he boards and bags every single book before it hits the dollar bin. I still do it his way, bag before board, tape on the back, and I think about that dude every time. Does anyone else still do it that exact way, or am I the only one who got yelled at into good habits?
My buddy Dave had a similar thing happen at a shop in Akron around 2009, except the guy was a customer, not the owner. Dave was just tossing his books in a box loose, and this older guy walked over and handed him a pack of bags and boards for free. Said he'd been collecting since the 70s and watching Dave ruin a run of Daredevils was making him sick. Dave told me he felt like a jerk, but he went home and bagged and boarded every book he owned that night. He still calls it his comic wake up call. Funny how one stranger can change how you treat your stuff forever.
