Overheard two dudes at a con arguing about who was the 'real' Batman fan

I was at the Baltimore Comic Con last Saturday grabbing some prints and these two guys were literally tallying how many issues each of them owned from the '89 run. One guy had 47 and the other had 52, and the guy with 47 was trying to say quality mattered more. Has anyone else noticed people turning fandom into a weird competition lately?

Man that's gotta be exhausting to witness, right? It's like some people forget you can just enjoy something without keeping score.

Wait, 52 issues from '89? That's actually a different number than I remember - the 1989 Batman series (the one with the yellow oval logo) only had 50 regular issues before they renumbered for the "Legends of the Dark Knight" thing. So either that dude was counting some annuals or variant covers, or he was just straight-up inflating his number, you know? Not that it really matters (I mean, who's keeping score besides those two guys), but it's funny how these competitions always seem to have some fuzzy math involved. The quality argument is even weirder though - like, you can just like Batman without having to prove it with a stack of floppies.
