Overheard a guy at my LCS say he ranks comics by how many times he cried reading them
He had a whole numbered list going from 1 to 50, with "The Death of Gwen Stacy" at number 3. I was just there to grab the new Ultimate Spider-Man, not get a full emotional breakdown of someone's pull list.

People are just looking for ways to measure stuff that can't really be measured, you know? Like trying to rank movies by how many times you checked your watch or books by how many pages made you stop and stare at the wall. It's the same impulse that makes guys rate every beer they've ever had on Untappd or keep a spreadsheet of their favorite burrito spots. We want to turn feelings into a numbers game so we can prove to ourselves that we're having the right kind of experience. That guy's list is just his way of trying to hold onto moments that hit him hard, even if it sounds crazy to everyone else listening.

Right because nothing says "normal human experience" like a spreadsheet of restaurant visits. @danielmason nailed it, we're all just trying to trick ourselves into feeling like we're doing life right by turning it into a stats board.

This whole thing is just another version of how people try to apply logic to emotions. You see it everywhere, not just with comics. People rank music by how many times they replay a song, or they rate vacations by how many pictures they took. It's like we're scared to just say "that hit me hard and I don't know why." So we build a ladder out of tears or album listens to make the feeling feel real. But feelings don't work like that. The list is just a way to hold onto something that can't actually be measured.
