My friend in Chicago thinks being a comic fan is about the movies now

We were at a bar last week and he said, 'If you don't watch the Marvel movies, you're not a real fan.' I told him I've been reading the actual books for 15 years, way before the MCU was a thing. He thinks the movies made comics popular, so they're the main thing now. I think being a fan is about the source material, not just the blockbusters. Which side are you on?

Honestly I felt that way too until I met someone who only knew the characters from movies. Made me realize the books are a totally different, deeper experience.

Yeah, your friend sounds like he's gatekeeping with the wrong gate. The movies are fun, but like @the_dylan said, the books are a whole different world. Guess I'm team source material.
