I quit hunting for graded comics and found joy in reading again

Chasing high grades made me forget why I love comics. Now I buy raw issues and actually read them. My enjoyment has doubled.

Oh man, this hits home. I got so stuck on the number on the slab that I stopped seeing the story inside (and honestly, the plastic case just feels wrong). I just bought a really beat up copy of Silver Surfer #4 last week because I love the story, and reading it felt way better than just staring at a perfect one on a shelf.

Seriously, a beat up Silver Surfer #4? I'm shocked you even found one that rough. But yeah, reading it probably beats staring at a slab any day.

I was totally caught up in that grading chase too. When did a number on a slab matter more than the actual comic? Switching to raw books let me connect with the stories I loved as a kid. My collection looks less perfect now, but I actually spend time with it. Isn't the point to enjoy these things, not just own them?
