How a comic convention in Portland changed my whole collecting style

I went to Rose City Comic Con two years ago and saw this guy with a long box full of dollar bin books. He just walked around handing them to kids for free. I asked him why and he said he'd rather see comics get read than sit in a bag. That moment hit me hard because I had like 30 boxes of stuff I never touched. Since then I've sold off about 4,000 of my 6,000 comics and only keep runs I actually reread. Has anyone else had a moment at a con or shop that made you rethink how you collect?

Notice the same thing happening everywhere with people holding onto unused stuff out of habit.

Yeah for sure @black.joel, I see this all the time with people I know. It's like we get into this weird comfort zone where having the stuff around just feels safer even if we never touch it. I've got a friend who still has a broken lamp in their garage from like five years ago because they keep saying they'll fix it someday. It's just built into how we think I guess, like holding onto things is less scary than letting them go.
