Comic-Con in San Diego last summer totally changed how I store my books

I was at a panel for indie creators and this guy next to me had his entire slab collection in these cheap plastic bins. He told me he lost like $2,000 worth of comics to mold after a pipe burst in his apartment. I never even thought about that. Now I keep everything in mylar bags with backing boards and check the humidity in my closet every month. Anyone else got a horror story about damaged books from a con?

Did your insurance cover any of that?

That third comment about insurance actually isn't quite right. Most standard renters or homeowners insurance won't cover comic books the same way they cover furniture or electronics. You usually need a separate policy or a rider specifically for collectibles. I learned that the hard way after a buddy of mine lost a bunch of old issues in a flood and his provider just laughed at him. The payout was basically nothing because they valued them at cover price, not what they were actually worth. Do you have a separate policy for your collection or are you just rolling the dice?
