Can we talk about the long boxes at my local shop in Portland?
Stopped by my old comic shop on Hawthorne in Portland over the weekend for the first time in about 8 years. Back in the day the back room had 40 long boxes you could dig through for hours, now it's down to 6 boxes and the rest of the space is Funko Pops. The owner said single issue sales dropped so much he had to pivot, which I get, but it felt weird. I still found a beat up copy of Saga #1 for $5 so the trip wasn't a total loss. Anybody else watching their local shop shrink the back issue bins?
Watching the back room at my shop go from 30 boxes to 8 hit me harder than I expected. I used to roll my eyes when people got sad about bins shrinking, figured it was just nostalgia and shops had to change to survive. Then I spent a Saturday digging for a beat up Uncanny X-Men #266 and found nothing, just rows of Pops and variant covers. That's when it clicked for me, the hunting part was the whole point, not just buying the book. Now I get why you'd feel weird about it, even if the owner is just doing what he has to.
