The day my espresso machine died mid-pull and I had to choose between fixing it or buying a new one

My Silvia stopped producing pressure right as I was pulling a shot for a client showing last month, and now I'm stuck debating whether to sink $150 into a new pump or just upgrade to something newer for $600. Anyone else face this repair vs replace dilemma with their gear?

In my experience older machines tend to outlast the new ones.

My buddy Tom had an old fridge from the late 90s. Thing was a beast. He finally replaced it last year with a brand new Samsung model. That new fridge died on him 14 months in. Compressor went out. Cost almost as much to fix as a new one. Meanwhile his old fridge is still running in his garage keeping drinks cold.

You really hit on something there. My old washing machine lasted almost 20 years with hardly a hiccup, but the new one I got started acting up after just three. I think it's because they pack too many fancy electronics into things now that just break easier. That older machine was simple, just a few basic parts that were easy to fix. So yeah, I totally agree, sometimes the older stuff holds up way better than the new stuff.
