Dropped $150 on a mitutoyo caliper and it was worth every penny
Honestly I fought using cheap digital calipers for years. Kept getting inconsistent measurements on my parts and just assumed it was my setup or my speeds. Finally broke down and bought a Mitutoyo 500-196 off Amazon last month and man what a difference. The feel is way smoother and the readings are actually repeatable now. I was chasing a 0.005 tolerance on some aluminum parts and the cheap ones were jumping around 0.002 just from me pressing different. Now I can actually trust what I see on the screen. Has anyone else had that moment where spending more on a tool actually fixed your scrap rate?

Honestly, @daniel857, you make a fair point, but $150 buys you a tool you'll have for twenty years. That's like $7.50 a year. I've bought $30 calipers that were off by a hair after a few months, so I get why some folks go big. But if you're just measuring lumber or checking if a bolt fits, yeah, that's a waste. It's all about how much you actually use it, not the number on the sticker.
