I finally weighed my rice before and after cooking and the math on those 'serving size' boxes is flat out wrong
I grabbed a $2 bag of long grain rice at Aldi three weeks ago and the label said a serving is a quarter cup dry, which is supposed to make about three quarters of a cup cooked. I weighed it on my kitchen scale to see if that was real and a quarter cup dry came out to about 46 grams, but the box claims a serving is 45 grams, so close enough there. Here is the problem though, when I cooked it and weighed the result I got barely half a cup, not three quarters, which means I was planning meals around numbers that do not exist. That matters because I budget $40 a week for food for two people and if I am short on rice I end up buying takeout on Thursday, which blows the whole thing. I started cooking a full cup dry per person for dinner and suddenly I had leftovers instead of a sad empty pot. Has anyone else actually measured this stuff or am I the only one weighing rice at 9pm like a weirdo?
