I tried carpet tiles in my den and now I'm tearing them out

They buckle at the seams and feel lumpy no matter how you lay them.

Read somewhere that happens if the subfloor isn't perfectly level.

I mean, is any floor ever perfectly level? Like really. That sounds like one of those things contractors say to scare you into paying for more work. Unless you're rolling marbles across the room and they all gather in one corner, how bad could it be? Most houses settle a bit anyway. People get way too hung up on stuff you'd never notice unless you were looking for it.

This one DIY site I was on said you need the subfloor within 1/8 inch over 10 feet for those tiles to sit right. @the_dakota has a point that no floor is perfect, but carpet tiles are unforgiving. They don't stretch like regular carpet, so every tiny dip or hump telegraphs right up to your feet. My buddy learned that the hard way and his place looked like a topographic map.
