Vent: my old boss talked me out of biscuits for cabinet doors and he was right
Been fighting with a set of maple uppers in my garage for two Saturdays because the biscuits kept blowing out the stile. My old lead called me and said just use dowels and a jig, you'll cut your glue up in half. Tried it on the last two doors and the joints came out tight with no shift, so now I'm wondering how many other shortcuts I've been ignoring.
How thick are your stiles and what size biscuit were you running? Every blowout I ever had on maple was because I was using a #20 in a 3/4 inch stile and the cutter wanted to break through the face. Went to a smaller biscuit and slowed my plunge way down and most of that went away. But yeah, dowels with a good self centering jig beat biscuits every time for door frames, the joint just lines up better and you don't get that little shift when you clamp. Only thing I'd say is check your dowel hole depth against your dowel length, if you bottom out you'll get a gap at the joint and blame the jig for nothing. What jig are you using, the store bought one or a shop made deal?
