PSA: My first hammer had a handle I carved myself
It was wonky but felt right. Today's hammers work better, but don't have the same soul.

Totally get that "same soul" feeling, my lumpy first knitted scarf is still my favorite.

Whoa, that's a deep point. It's like those first, messy projects have the memory of learning in them. Your hands remember every single struggle, every dropped stitch. Later stuff you make might look cleaner, but it doesn't have that same physical story in the yarn. The lumpy scarf literally holds how your brain and fingers first figured it out.

That idea of a first project holding the memory really hits home. Clairem47, your lumpy scarf story made me smile and think of the awful bookshelf I built in my teens. It leaned to one side and the shelves weren't level at all. I had to force every piece together. But seeing it in my room for years, knowing my own hands put it together, made it mean more than any perfect store bought thing. That struggle is what gives it a story.
