Talked to a retired guy at the coffee shop who changed how I see job hopping
I was grabbing coffee last Tuesday in Austin and an older guy named Bill started chatting me up. He said he worked 38 years at the same company and retired with a pension, but he told me younger folks are smart for switching jobs every 2-3 years because loyalty doesn't pay the bills anymore. It hit different because I've been at my current place for 4 years and been scared to leave, but he said staying put cost him at least $200k in missed raises. Has anyone else had an older worker give them permission to move on?

That "200k in missed raises" math doesn't really work since raises compound differently for everyone.

38 years at one place and he's telling you to job hop? That's wild. I had to read that twice. @kai914 might be right about the math being fuzzy, but I just can't get over a guy who stuck it out that long saying the opposite is the smart move. Most people that age would be all about loyalty and paying your dues. Man, that's a real wake up call.
